When someone searches for a service provider or an industry expert, they're increasingly turning to AI tools like ChatGPT, Google's AI Overview, and Perplexity before they ever visit a website or pick up the phone. And what those tools pull from isn't your paid ads or your social content. It's what credible, independent sources have said about you.
That's earned media. And earned media is what public relations produces.
Research from Muck Rack analyzing more than 25 million cited links across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini found that 84% of all AI citations come from earned media. Journalism alone accounts for more than a quarter of those citations. AI engines are designed to filter out self-promotion because a brand talking about itself carries far less weight than a publication covering it without a financial reason to do so.
You can have a well-optimized website, a healthy social following, and an active paid media strategy and still be invisible to AI search if you haven't built a record of third-party credibility. Marketing controls your message. PR earns your reputation. Those are not the same thing, and AI knows the difference.
A press placement also doesn't expire the way it used to. When your business earns coverage in a credible outlet, that story enters the body of sources AI draws from, potentially for months or years. It's not today's news and tomorrow's bird cage lining. It's a citation that keeps working quietly.
Public relations isn't the soft side of your communications strategy. Right now, it may be the most measurable investment you can make.
